GEMSTONES
Gems are rock forms that develop within the Earth, taking the form of mineralization and crystallization.
A distinction is made between natural gems, natural and treated gems, and synthetic gems:
. natural gems come from natural elements;
. natural and treated gems. Before setting, the gem is treated to improve its color, hardness or appearance;
. synthetic gems are created in a laboratory.
Once extracted, the gems are appraised, cut by a lapidary and then mounted for goldsmiths, jewelers and jewelry makers.
Depending on their hardness, beauty, durability and rarity, gems are divided into categories. There are 3 categories, namely:
Precious stones
Worldwide, there are around a hundred stones that can be qualified as precious, the definition being primarily cultural. A stone can be considered precious when it meets 4 criteria:
. the aesthetic factor, with its color palette, transparency and brilliance;
. rarity;
. mechanical resistance: the Mohs scale determines hardness (diamond has a hardness of 10);
. chemical resistance.
In France, four stones are considered precious: diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds. Precious stones are natural gems of a certains hardness, clarity and beauty (brilliance, color).
Most gemstones appear as crystals. They are found in the earth's mantle and come to the surface after volcanic eruptions, for example.
The color of a gemstone does not always determine its identity. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds can also be classified as gemstones if their quality is insufficient.
Gemstones
Gemstones that are not precious are classified as fine stones. They include agate, aquamarine, alexandrite, amethyst, citrine, carnelian, garnet, jade, jasper, lapis lazuli, onyx, opal, peridot, quartz, spinel, topaz, tourmaline, turquoise, zircon...
Organic gemstones
Organic stones are gems derived from organic rather than mineral matter. They can come from wood, such as amber, copal and jet, or from the sea, such as mother-of-pearl, pearl and coral.
They are more fragile than mineral stones, as their hardness is relatively low.
